DIGICEL TO HOST WORLD BANK-SUPPORTED APP WORKSHOP THIS WEEKEND
Telecommunications provider, Digicel, will host a World Bank-supported workshop for aspiring app developers with the goal of helping them turn their ideas into profitable ventures. The workshop will be held at Digicel’s Kingston headquarters on November 16 and 17. The event is initiated by infoDev, a global innovation program in the World Bank Group, and part of its Entrepreneurship Program for Innovation in the Caribbean (EPIC).
With the proliferation of mobile phone subscriptions in Jamaica and the world, the development of applications or ‘apps’ as they are commonly known, is an economic activity with huge potential. “The workshop is designed to support app start-ups and will cover topics including Going Global, Investor Pitching and Marketing. In addition, participants will be able to share ideas with Caribbean app developers whose work has produced tools that can be applied to education, development and commerce,” explained senior communications manager at Digicel Shelly-Ann Harris.
“Apps are a tool of innovation in the mobile world, making once complex tasks easier for everybody”, she added. “This workshop is going to facilitate and inspire new ideas and that’s central to our ethos here at Digicel.”
Presenters at the workshop will include Giorgio Valentini, the World Bank’s Country Representative for Jamaica & Guyana. Participants will also be mentored during the workshop by experts including Ed Sherwood-Smith, Digicel Group Software Development Manager.
